Description
|
Slow traffic, as the healthiest and most
environment-friendly mode of transportation, has received widespread
attention from all walks of life. To actively respond to climate change and
accelerate green and low-carbon development, Beijing has designed
bicycle-only lanes to maximize the safety of cyclists and reduce cycling
time, making bicycles a more preferred mode of transportation for people.
The first bicycle-only lane in Beijing
starts from Huilongguan in Changping on the east and ends at Houchangcun Road
in Haidian on the west, with a total length of 6.5 kilometers and 10
entrances and exits along the route. The entire bicycle-only is under
enclosed management. Pedestrians and electric vehicles are prohibited from
entering the 6 meters wide lane. A tidal flow lane is set. The opening hours
of the tidal flow lane from the east to the west are 0: 00-12: 00; the
opening hours from the west to the east are from 12: 00 to 24: 00. It can not
only meet the traffic demand in rush hour but also effectively save road
resources. Meanwhile, it is equipped with intelligent facilities such as a
fully automatic boosting system and a self-luminous guidance system to
improve service and management standards.
The opening of the first bicycle-only
lane in Beijing has received widespread attention from the residents. It has
solved the problem of bicycle travel between the two places, guaranteed a
safe and comfortable riding environment for cyclists, and provided a green
and healthy choice for commuting with reduced travel time.

Key
Data
|
The
bicycle-only lane is 6.5 kilometers long, including 2.74 kilometers of ground
section, 2.72 kilometers of elevated section, and 1.04 kilometers of existing
road.
Since
the opening of the first bicycle-only lane on May 31, 2019, the annual riding
volume has increased from 1.46 million in the first year to 1.97 million in
the third year and the maximum daily traffic volume from 6,000 to 8,000.
Among the cyclists, 56% are commuters and 30% are riding for leisure and
exercise. The willingness of the citizens to travel slowly has continued to
increase.
According
to calculations, the bicycle-only lane saves 32% of the time compared with
private car travel and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 0.17 kg per
person per kilometer, making it the most cost-effective green commuting
method.

In
July 2020, the west extension project was completed and put into use. The
east extension and south extension projects were also started one after
another.
The
east extension project extends eastward to the Tiantongyuan area and is
expected to be completed in June 2023.
The
south extension project goes south to the Xizhimen transportation hub and the
design of the first phase of the project is being promoted.

Innovation
Point
|
To
adapt to the changes in traffic flow in rush hours in the morning and
evening, a tidal flow lane is set according to local conditions, which
effectively improves the utilization of road resources and facilitates the
travel of cyclists.
